Felvidék (Upper Hungary; formerly called Felfôld, or Felsômagyarország): the mountainous northern part of historical Hungary, i.e., the northernmost part of the Hungarian-speaking regions of the Carpathian Basin. It was only in the late nineteenth century that the term "Felvidék" came to be a synonym for "Felföld" and "Felsômagyarország". Since Hungary's dismemberment in 1920 by the Treaty of Trianon, the term "Felvidék" has come to refer only to the Hungarian and Slovak-inhabited parts of Upper Hungary that now belong to Slovakia, as well as to the part of the Kisalföld that now lies in Slovakia.
