Bakony: the region in the central Dunántúl
(qq.v.) named for the largest mountain range north of Lake Balaton.
A closed, contiguous stretch, it was a piece of untouched nature
until the late nineteenth century. Its population has preserved
many archaic customs and mores to this day. Extensive animal husbandry
is the typical form of agriculture, and the woods are good for
berrying. In times past, the region was famed for its glass blowers,
and its precision-instrument makers.
